There are so many reasons why Austin is known as one of the greatest cities in the country, but of them all, it’s helpful to note that San Francisco is not the only city with an award-winning wine country just an hour road trip away. Yes, that’s right friends, Austin isn’t amazing simply because it is in the great state of Texas. So, a bit back, some friends and I headed out of town to enjoy good wine, mouth-watering bbq, and sheer relaxation. Oh, and good company, of course!
Wine was certainly the focus of the weekend and with that said, there is no greater place in Texas for enjoying vino than Fredericksburg. Located just 60 miles from Austin, Fredericksburg is a quaint little German town known for vineyards, a great little downtown, and relaxing bed and breakfasts.
My favorite and probably most well-known vineyard in Texas is Becker Vineyards. It wasn’t the only winery we visited but definately worth the feature. The winery’s buildings are a perfect mix of French rustic and chic. But even more than the beautiful grounds and numerous fun events throughout the year, the wine is just divine. Not only is their selection of wine vast in numbers but really is wonderful for both the recreational wine drinker and enthusiast.
Looking for a peaceful and relaxing place to rest your head after all the wine drinking? Look no further than this beautiful gem of a bed & breakfast. “Enchanting, serene, secluded…Hoffman Haus Bed & Breakfast is the essence of rustic sophistication in the beautiful hills of central Texas.” With close proximity to the historic Main Street of Fredericksburg, the location is perfect for walking to shops and restaurants. Oh… and I wouldn’t dare forget to mention the wonderful breakfast, which is delivered to your room each morning!
Last stop, but certainly not to be forgotten or devalued, is the amazing and famous BBQ you just must make a stop for! After eating your delightful brekkie and checking out of the B&B, be sure to take an extra scenic route on your way back to Austin to stop at the smoky deliciousness of The Salt Lick BBQ! No trip to the hill country would be complete without this. Be sure to taste a bit of everything… but save room for dessert. The pecan pie is AMAZING as it has sat by the smoker since it made its way out of the oven and is soaking up all that smokiness!
Pray tell, what better little weekend could you have? For out-of-towners, I just gave you one more reason to visit the great city of Austin! And, for my fellow Austin-ites, if you have not made this weekend getaway… what are you waiting for? Oh… an open reservation at a B&B? Valid answer. Yes, be sure to book your accommodations a bit in advance!
